A delegation visit to Odisha highlighted the essential role of community radio in enhancing local disaster management and preparedness

A delegation of 22 members, including representatives from the United Nations, international organizations, state disaster departments, and key stakeholders like Radio Bulbul, Youth4WaterPlus, and Reliance Foundation of India, visited Sanakrushnapur village in the Basudevpur block of Bhadrak district, Odisha. The purpose was to observe how local communities prepare for and respond to disasters.

Showcasing Odisha’s Leadership in Disaster Management
Recognized globally for its disaster management expertise, Odisha showcased its effective preparedness, community involvement, and crisis coordination. The delegation witnessed how district administration, in collaboration with initiatives like Radio Bulbul and Youth4WaterPlus, ensures resilience and inclusivity during emergencies.

Role of Community-Led Initiatives
Youth-led initiatives such as Youth4WaterPlus are driving community resilience through water conservation, plastic reduction, plantation drives, health and hygiene promotion, and emergency shelter provision. Leveraging technology, they disseminate accurate information, combating misinformation and reaching global audiences.

Special Focus on Vulnerable Groups
The district administration’s strategies for safeguarding children, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities were commended. The community’s inclusivity shone during a recent crisis when Bangladeshi fishermen were provided shelter for six months.

Conservation Efforts and Stakeholder Engagement
The delegation also explored mangrove conservation efforts by Reliance Foundation, followed by discussions with the District Collector. Delegates praised the integrated disaster management practices.

The visit concluded at Radio Bulbul, highlighting its pivotal role in disaster management. Through timely information dissemination, street plays, and community empowerment, the station has become a lifeline in critical times.
