Which of your previous roles was the most difficult to play, and how did you prepare for it?
One of the most challenging roles I’ve played was that of a dead body handler in a film. To prepare for this role, I knew I had to truly understand the world of morgue workers and their routines. So, I spent three days immersing myself in their lives, observing their work, and understanding their emotions and perspectives. It allowed me to bring authenticity and depth to the character I portrayed.

Could you describe the current project you’re working on and the factors that led you to choose it and why?
Currently, I am involved in multiple films and web series. One of the projects that I’m particularly excited about is a stage play called “Mughal E Azam,” which involves touring major cities in the USA and Canada. When selecting projects, I consider several factors. The quality of the role and its potential to showcase my skills is paramount.

How do you respond to criticism and unfavourable comments?
When it comes to criticism and unfavourable comments, I believe in maintaining an open-minded approach. Constructive criticism can be valuable as it helps me grow as an actor and improve my craft. However, it’s also important to differentiate between genuine critique and baseless negativity

Who are some of your greatest industry influences?
I draw inspiration from influential filmmakers of the 80s as well as contemporary artists who have a deep understanding of cinema and storytelling. Their work encompasses a larger purpose and meaning, and witnessing their creative journeys has had a profound impact on my artistic sensibilities.

How do you decide the roles you wish to play?
When considering the roles I wish to play, I take into account various factors. The enriching nature of the character and the story it tells is crucial. I look for roles that offer challenges and opportunities for personal and professional growth. I also consider the chance to reflect my ideas on specific issues and explore different genres and character types.

What kept you going through a moment in your career when you wanted to give up? And, being an outsider, what advice would you give to aspiring actors?
During moments of doubt in my career, I found strength in having backup plans to cushion any insecurities. I pursued clearing UGC’s NET for Lectureship and securing admission to prestigious institutions like IIMC for PG in Journalism, which provided alternative avenues for a dignified livelihood for myself and my family.

Additionally, having a background in the Indian Army as a Lieutenant and completing my post-graduation from the National School of Drama in Acting also provided me with a strong foundation to face the challenges of the industry. My advice to aspiring actors, especially outsiders, would be to have perseverance and resilience. Believe in yourself, work hard on your craft, and be prepared to face obstacles.

Since you first started your career, how has the industry changed?
Looking back on my journey, I’ve witnessed tremendous growth and transformation in the entertainment industry, especially Bollywood. When I started, there were fewer platforms and opportunities. The industry was more limited, with only a few weekly serials on Doordarshan.

However, with the advent of digital platforms and globalization, Bollywood has expanded its reach and impact. The audience has become more diverse, and there is a greater demand for content that resonates with a wide range of viewers. The industry has also become more inclusive, providing opportunities to actors from various backgrounds and showcasing diverse stories.

Can you tell us about a set or tour moment that stands out in your mind?
I have had many memorable moments on sets and during tours. Each project brings its own unique experiences and challenges. However, I would need more clarification on what specific type of moment you are interested in hearing about. There have been moments of laughter, intense scenes, bonding with co-actors and crew members, and instances where the hard work and dedication of everyone involved paid off in creating something truly extraordinary.

Which lesson from your profession have you found to be most important?
In my experience, one of the most important lessons from my profession is the understanding that being an actor requires not only the physicality of an athlete but also the philosophical mindset of a sage. Acting is not just about entertainment; it has the power to enlighten, inspire, and create a meaningful impact.

What has been your career’s most fulfilling experience to date?
As I reflect on my career so far, I find fulfilment in moments where I have discovered aspects of myself that I never imagined or considered possible. The process of diving deep into characters, understanding their emotions, and portraying them authentically has been incredibly fulfilling.

What steps do you take to get ready for a role or performance?
It depends on the familiarity and proximity of the character to my own self. I begin by thoroughly studying the script, understanding the character’s journey, motivations, and relationships. I work closely with the director and fellow actors to explore the emotional nuances of the role. Physical preparation, such as training, if needed for the character, is also a crucial part of my preparation.
