Former Director General of Police Shyam Narayan Tiwari breathed his last today at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar at the age of 81. Tiwari was battling cancer for quite some time and is survived by his wife and two sons.

Tiwari passed from Allahabad University and joined IPS in 1963. He has also served various positions in the State Police.

Tiwari is credited of spearheading almost all branches of the police department in Odisha and in central organisations. He served as DIG Central Range, Director (Intelligence), Director (Prisons), DG Police apart from successfully taking responsibility on central deputation as Joint Secy, Intelligence Bureau.

He was the first and the only police officer from Odisha to serve as Director SPG. Known for his expertise in Internal Security and anti-Naxal movement, SN Tiwari had brought in major reforms in Odisha Police.
