In today’s world, the health sector is coming up with newer concepts. Due to modern lifestyle, environmental pollution, population explosion and other factors, major health issues are escalating that are not possible to tackle using just the prevalent medical science. Dr. Pinaki Panigrahi, the founder of AIPH University says that the major population is affected due to such health and environmental issues which needs to be included as a part of Public Health and demands continuous research.
“Our country has developed several universities and research centres for imparting medical education, along with generating experts and technicians for the paramedical services. Although Public Health is a vast sector, adequate attention is not given towards producing more experts, researchers and professionals in this field. Hence, it’s high time to create opportunities in the department of Public Health for exclusive courses and research”, said Dr. Panigrahi while speaking to OdishaLIVE.
Efforts by the non-resident Indian, Pinaki Panigrahi
Dr. Pinaki Panigrahi, a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Pediatrics, college of Public Health, University of Nebraska Medical Centre, USA made headlines worldwide for his discovery of an inexpensive method to prevent sepsis, a deadly infection that kills about 1 million babies around the world every year. After years of research, the ‘Pro-biotic’ (live bacteria and yeast that are good for health) curing methods that he has come up with certainly plays a crucial role in the treatment of the newborns.
In order to include Public Health in the mainstream, Dr. Panigrahi along with his American associates founded Asian Institute of Public Health (AIPH) University. Started in the year 2008, it has now secured its position as a modern university. In the year 2018, a bill was passed by the state assembly for the establishment of this university.
This is the second public health university in India and the first in the eastern India.
Why learn about Public Health?
A patient seeks a doctor while the doctor figures out the problem and provides a solution, basically called as health service. Whereas in Public Health, a group, an area, a community or hundreds or thousands of people are involved, resulting public health as a significant topic. Thus, programmes like PhD, Post graduation, Graduation and other executive courses are an effort by AIPH University to bring about a new era in public health.
Located between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, near Pahala which is the temporary campus for AIPH University. However, a full-fledged and permanent campus is going to be set on a 20 acre land near the IIT campus in Arugul, Jatani.
PhD, Post Graduation and Graduation in Public Health
The four major departments of AIPH University are the School of Public Health, School of Biological Sciences, School of Management and School of Allied Health Sciences.
The PhD programmes include Public Health, Biological Sciences and Health Care Management. The post graduation has courses such as Masters in Public Health (MPH), Master of Science (Applied Microbiology), Master of Science (Life Sciences), Master of Science (Zoology), Master of Science (Botany). BBA and MBA are the management courses that are going to commence from this year. To help the working students, courses such as Health Care Management, Hospital Management, and several Executive MBA Programs are included by the university.
The university hosts students from Odisha, West Bengal and the North-Eastern states of India. AIPH University is the first and only health University of India which provides education along with hospital and community based research, creating the future professionals in the domain.
